Cooling System FAQ πŸŒ‘οΈπŸš—

Why is my vehicle’s cooling system important?

Your cooling system keeps the engine at the proper operating temperature. Without it, engines can overheat quickly—leading to expensive damage like blown head gaskets, warped components, or complete engine failure.

What does the cooling system actually do?

It circulates coolant through the engine and radiator to absorb and remove heat. Think of it as your engine’s temperature control system.

What are signs my cooling system may have a problem?

Common warning signs include:

  • Engine temperature running hotter than normal
  • Coolant leaks under the vehicle
  • Sweet smell from the engine bay
  • Heater not working properly
  • Steam coming from under the hood
  • Low coolant warnings
  • Frequent need to add coolant

How often should coolant be changed?

It depends on the vehicle and coolant type, but many manufacturers recommend coolant service somewhere between 30,000–100,000 miles. Using the correct coolant is critical—not all coolants are the same.

Can I just top off my coolant myself?

Sometimes, but repeatedly losing coolant usually means there’s a leak or another issue that should be inspected. Also, mixing the wrong coolant types can create problems.

Why does my car overheat in warmer weather?

Higher temperatures put more stress on the cooling system. Weak hoses, failing thermostats, clogged radiators, worn water pumps, or low coolant levels often show up once summer heat arrives.

What causes coolant leaks?

Leaks can come from:

  • Hoses
  • Radiators
  • Water pumps
  • Thermostat housings
  • Reservoir tanks
  • Clamps and seals

Even small leaks can become major problems over time.

Is overheating really that serious?

Very. Even one overheating event can cause severe engine damage. Continuing to drive an overheating vehicle can turn a simple repair into a major engine replacement.

What’s included in a cooling system inspection?

A proper inspection may include:

  • Pressure testing
  • Checking coolant condition
  • Inspecting hoses and clamps
  • Testing thermostat operation
  • Inspecting radiator and fans
  • Checking for leaks
  • Verifying proper operating temperature

Does my heater affect the cooling system?

Yes. Your heater uses engine coolant to create cabin heat. If your heater stops working properly, it can sometimes indicate cooling system issues.

Why does Next Gen Auto Care take cooling system maintenance seriously?

Because preventative maintenance is almost always less expensive than overheating damage. We focus on catching issues early and using the correct fluids and procedures for your specific vehicle.
