Why brake pad measurements matter
Brake pads wear down over time as they press against the rotors to slow and stop your vehicle. The thinner the pad material gets, the less usable life remains.
A measurement by itself does not tell the whole story. We also consider:
- How evenly the pads are wearing
- Rotor condition
- Rust or corrosion
- Caliper movement
- Brake noise or vibration
- Driving habits
- Vehicle weight

General brake pad measurement guide
8–10mm: Usually considered new or near-new.
6–7mm: Still in good condition for most vehicles.
4–5mm: Often a “monitor” or “future attention” range. Replacement may not be urgent, but it is time to start planning.
3mm: Getting close to the end of usable life. Depending on the vehicle, driving conditions, and wear pattern, replacement may be recommended soon.
2mm or less: Usually considered urgent. Waiting too long can increase stopping distance, create noise, damage rotors, and become a safety concern.
Metal-on-metal grinding: Stop driving if possible and have the brakes inspected immediately.
Why two shops may give different brake opinions
